Ravens have been surrounded with myths throughout history and are one of my favorite subject matter for my paintings. I love all the amazing creatures on this planet struggling for habitat and needing homes.
Although I have formal training in traditional representation, I find color to be the most exciting aspect of painting and have been exploring complementary intense color.
After my Masters in Art in 1989, I worked as a sculptor, creating indoor/outdoor female, figurative sculptures for 15 years from cement, wood and clay. In 2008 I began painting with pastels, then 3 years later, oil on canvas. During this shift my subject matter changed from the figure to the landscape surrounding my home in Northern California and beyond, and varies from water scenes and trees to wildlife and birds.
Ultimately, regardless of medium, subject matter or muse, my goal has been, from the beginning, to capture the passionate mutable spirit, joy and beauty of nature, and to capture a moment that rings true.

Linda J. Parkinson has been painting animals and portraits since childhood. She is an honors graduate in animal sciences from the University of Maryland. Her post-graduate studies in wildlife at Humboldt State University involved her in wildlife rehabilitation and education, which inspired her transition to wildlife art. Linda's beautiful watercolor paintings have shown and won awards throughout California and Oregon, and can be found in private collections worldwide.
Her style is characterized by vibrant colors, fine detail, and an intimate knowledge of the subject matter. Linda volunteers with the Humboldt Wildlife Care Center, on their Board of Directors and as an educator and rehabilitator. She has spent many years working with beautiful birds of prey, who often become her models.

I’m a self-taught artist, inspired by color and fantasy. My primary medium is ceramics. Many years ago I took a night class in ceramics and fell in love with clay. I was born and raised in Czechoslovakia, today Czech Republic. I am a self-taught artist. I began to paint in my early fifties after moving to the US 14 years ago. I have lived in a number of societies and cultures, and worked as a psychotherapist and a researcher for many years. Art came to me as a way of being, as a meditation, as a life lived in silence, after those previous years of much thinking, talking, discussing, and analyzing. However, that first phase served the next; only now can I dedicate myself to creating magical spaces, telling stories, and figuring out textures and colors.
Creative influences have been many: ‘naive’, or ‘outsider’ artists (Art Brut, William Hawkins, Granma Moses, Henri Rousseau, etc.), Indian miniatures, Mexican bark paintings, Australian aboriginal artists, early Renaissance painters, etc.

I painted this in 2006, after a painting trip to Paris with Micki Flatmo.
Oil paints have absorbed my attention for decades, to the exclusion of any other medium. I work outdoors (en plein air) and in the studio, from photos and memory. I’m inspired more by light and shadow playing across surfaces than by any particular subject matter, but lately I’ve been favoring urban settings – buildings and people – over most other subjects. Old Town Eureka and Humboldt Bay, both within a few blocks of my home, are favorite subject matter, but I’ve traveled as far afield as Beijing, Paris and Mexico in search of inspiration.

I'm a hard working grandma, called madre by the grandchildren, who lives in NorCal with hubby Leon, 4 dogs [our jasper still in our hearts], 4 cats we've buried here, & 6 chickens. I garden, read, and work on improvements in the house. And I try to take photographs.
I started taking pictures in the early 1980's, mostly portraits of my children and their friends. I moved to digital in the 90's and, going full circle, I am experimenting with film again. I am totally self taught. I take pictures of our daily lives.

Leon is a retired school psychologist who also started shooting in film and now uses digital. He also records pieces of our lives and is self-taught. Mostly he spends time in his workshop making pieces of furniture for our house and doing hard labor around our property.

I painted this image after seeing a bobcat on a trail at the Morris Graves Foundation. The wildcat that I actually saw was sunning himself when I came upon him. He sat for quite awhile before turning tail and moving on. I was struck by his rough beauty and grace.
I am primarily a watercolorist that finds inspiration in the beauty of my natural surroundings and the ordinary in life. For me, painting is a process that has become an on-going, "active" meditation. I also work as an adult and children's art instructor through various art organizations locally. The Rose-bellied Bunting (Passerina rositae) is also known as Rosita's Bunting.
This bird can only be found in a small range in southeast Oaxaca and extreme southwest Chiapas.
This striking, electric-blue bird with a red underbelly was reputedly named by a French man who lived in Mexico in the 1800s. He named the bird after his Mexican wife, Rosita, because "they were the two most beautiful things he had seen."
I am a late bloomer. I have for many years been an art educator and art therapist, and finally listened to my own advice. Moving small everyday reverences from my mind, to hand, to canvas is one of my largest joys and comforts. Translating the natural world, my travels, the faces of those I love have been my efforts. Oils give me the lush world of feeling and depth I want to convey. Bombarded with frenetic, noisy techno-excess in today’s world, I consider it an act of anarchy to tenderly record the simple, the quiet, the essential. I do believe the ordinary is quite extraordinary. I cherish the messy, unpredictable and nourishing act of painting.
