Animal Refuge Kansai is in huge need to continue helping orphaned animals from the Japan earthquake.

Update 3rd December 2011
... Meanwhile with the passing of time, now nearly nine months after the earthquake, many shelters, both private and government run, are facing the pinch, financially and lacking volunteer help. Animals kept in small cages for this length of time are showing severe signs of stress.
ARK was asked to take in more animals from a government run shelter in Fukushima to relieve pressure on the staff there....

Rachel Schlueter, "My Griz"

Rachel Schlueter
"My Griz" 2011
Oil on 5x6" panel
sold
10% donation to Sequoia Humane Society

I took this photo, the poor Griz is a stuffed trophy bear at a sporting goods store in Sacramento, anyhow, this bear was so amazing to see, so very impressive. I like to work from my own photos but getting close to a Griz is probably not going to happen, so I got a couple good shots to work from.

Stacey Young for Gut Aiderbichl

Guest artist Stacey Young
of Fabulous Animal Rescue Project
textured acrylic on canvas
12x12
$65

"Salzburg is not only the birthplace of Mozart, but of Gut Aiderbichl, a paradise for animals. This extraordinary sanctuary is the brainchild of Michael Aufhauser, Austria and Germany’s own Doctor Dolittle. Visitors arrive at the complex of gorgeous chalets only to be nudged into considerable interspecies camaraderie with the hundreds of rescued goats, horses, donkeys, chickens, geese, cows and the odd fox. There are few sanctuaries like this one anywhere in the world.

"Michael recently opened amazing outdoor enclosures for their ex-lab chimpanzees. When I watched a video of the chimps being let outside for the first time EVER in their lives I was so incredibly moved.

"What Michael has done for these chimpanzees and so many other animals is so extraordinary. I was inspired to paint this piece..... a chimpanzee walking out of the turmoil of a life of experiments and torture into the sunlight.

"This original painting is part of a rescue group series I have started. I wanted to do more to help animals in need and the noble rescue workers who protect them. I thought I could use my art to fund the rescue groups I stand with."

$32.00 of this sale will be donated to Gut Aiderbichl.

This painting can be purchased through FARP's Etsy shop

Stacey's work through FARP for the animals displaced by the Japan earthquake inspired me to start this blog to raise donations for animal rescue.

Arupa for Panthera

Arupa
"Bobcat: Morris Graves Foundation"
16 x 24"
watercolor
$400
50% donation to Panthera.org

I painted this image after seeing a bobcat on a trail at the Morris Graves Foundation. The wildcat that I actually saw was sunning himself when I came upon him. He sat for quite awhile before turning tail and moving on. I was struck by his rough beauty and grace.

Panthera is working to ensure that tigers remain in the wild forever. Panthera's CEO, Dr. Alan Rabinowitz, was instrumental in creating the world’s largest tiger reserve in Myanmar – the Hukaung Valley Tiger Reserve, and today, under the directorship of Dr. Joe Smith, Panthera is leading tiger conservation efforts with two major initiatives: Tigers Forever and the Tiger Corridor Initiative. Through these programs, Panthera is working to protect and secure key tiger populations, and ensure connectivity between sites so that tigers can live long into the future.

On annual camping trips to North East California and South East Oregon, happening upon a pair of these stately birds has always been a source of joy and wonder for me. When they are accompanied by their young fluffy offspring it is even more entertaining! But that is also worrisome: when I am going to sleep after seeing them I worry about all the predators in the area! This particular bird was one of many thousands gathered along the Platte River in Nebraska, where they have gathered for years to rest on their long Spring migration. The Sandhill is one of the oldest living bird species on earth.

These brilliantly hued songbirds appeared alongside the Mad River near where I live in Blue Lake this Spring! Their lively song enhanced my walks along the levy and this is the 1st of my images of them.

"Golden Thought" is from an ongoing series of bird images on which I work spontaneously. With a loose idea in mind, I randomly  roll out 3 colors of recycled oil based ink  on hard plastic. Then I wipe out my image with cotton swabs and bits of paper towel. When I am satisfied with the emerging image, I place the plastic on the bed of an etching press, cover it with damp rag paper, and roll it through the press. The pressure forces the ink into the paper and the image appears!

This image is a reminder for me of the sacredness of our natural world. The mystery and wonder of a bird and of wildflowers are timeless.

Lida Penkova/"Elephant Dream"

"Elephant Dream,"  linocut, hand-colored with acrylic and colored pencils
19.5 x 18.25
$350, donation 20% to Animal Aid Unlimited

Animal Aid Unlimited is

“.....quite an incredible organization, quite incredible people who are the founders and run the place with many others....close to Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. I met them a couple of years ago and was absolutely stunned by their work and kindness to rescue half-dead street animals. A family of three, originally from Seattle. They do unbelievably important work in a country where animals are treated with brutality. “
Lida
Eureka

“Animal Aid has treated 32,000 animals since 2002. Animal Aid has 35 staff and has welcomed more than 600 volunteers from 30 countries to come and share their love for animals with the street animals of India. 250-300 ever-changing animals are waiting for the love and caring support of volunteers, so please urge everyone you know to consider including volunteering in your holiday to India. Rajasthan is a magical place and Animal Aid will give purpose and meaning to your holidays beyond what you might have dreamed possible.

“Thank you for the inclusion of Animal Aid. You never know where the seeds you scatter will end up and what magnificent flowers might bloom. We appreciate so much that you remembered Animal Aid and that you've put an unusual twist to getting the word out. We will keep our fingers crossed, (and the animals their hooves and toes, even the paralyzed ones!!) that others will learn about the street animals of India through you and your art, and that among them we may find extraordinary volunteers, good donors, and, maybe most importantly, maybe we'll help nudge people a little further toward compassionate respect for all living beings. That sounds like a tall order but it's the smallest increments, (I'm convinced) that gets us all ‘there.’ Thank you for being an inspiration.”
