Thank you from Panthera

April 23, 2012

Dear Tiger! Auction Artists and Organizers,

On behalf of everyone here at Panthera, thank you for being a part of Art Helps the Planet’s Tiger! Auction! We are so grateful for your incredible generosity! One hundred percent of the funds you have raised will go directly to the field for the protection of tigers.

We would especially like to thank Regina Case for having the inspiration and motivation to make this wonderful event happen. We were so impressed and honored by the quality and number of artists involved. It was our pleasure to share it on Facebook, and we were so happy to see that our Facebook fans were just as impressed as we were. We thank each one of you for choosing to dedicate your art to ensuring the future of one of the earth’s most beautiful creatures.

The iconic tiger is the world’s largest cat, and it is also the most threatened with extinction. One hundred years ago, as many as 100,000 wild tigers roamed the forests and grasslands of Asia. Today, fewer than 3,200 tigers remain in the wild.

Tigers face major threats from three things - poaching, loss of prey species, and fragmentation and destruction of habitat. Panthera is working tirelessly to combat these threats. Through the Tigers Forever program and the Save the Tiger Fund, we are partnering with local communities, local and national governments, and conservation organizations across Asia to implement effective enforcement of protected areas through well-trained park guards, protect and monitor tiger and prey populations, and secure tiger habitat.

Panthera is the world’s leading organization devoted exclusively to the conservation of wild cats and their ecosystems. Utilizing the expertise of the world’s premier cat biologists, Panthera develops and implements global conservation strategies for the largest, most imperiled cats – tigers, lions, jaguars, and snow leopards. By conserving cats, which are apex predators and keystone species, we in turn conserve their habitats, and all the other species that rely on those areas, including humans. Your gift is supporting critical work that while focused on saving wild cats, goes far beyond.

If you have any questions, please contact our Development Department at 646-786-0405 or eadams@panthera.org.

Thank you again for your generosity and support. Sincerely,
Andrea Heydlauff Vice President

Marian Coleman "Alphabet Cats"

Alphabet Cats is a 12” by 18” frameable poster.  The 26 letters of the alphabet are formed by cats in different positions.  I made each letter as a separate little piece of artwork, then combined them.  The whole process took almost a year.  I was happy when it was done, but I missed the involvement in a long-term project.  Although the kitties were fashioned after our own cat, Peanut, I felt throughout the last year that I had a litter of 26 different cats!

The poster is perfect for kids, but every adult I know has fallen in love with it.

$20 (plus $5 postage in the US, $8 everywhere else.)

30% donation to Panthera.org
Also available as a blank greeting card for $4.50.  (plus $1.00 postage in the US, $2.00 everywhere else.) Contact us to purchase a poster or one or more cards.

I’m a self-taught artist, inspired by color and fantasy. My primary medium is ceramics. Many years ago I took a night class in ceramics and fell in love with clay. I’ve been working and experimenting with it for over 30 years. I love the feel and the flexibility of clay, and I love the exquisite luminosity, range and depth of the glaze colors. When I work I try to follow the direction of my heart and my mind and my hands while listening to the voice of the clay.

In the last few years I've been experimenting with art on the computer.  The artwork for this poster was made entirely in Photoshop.

High-Fire Styles Tiles by Sara Starr

Sara’s tile works draw from her background as a painter. She first paints designs to define areas on her tiles using a wax-resist technique called “cuerda seca,” which originated in 15th-century Spain. She then pours glazes to create distinct shapes. Her finished works often reflect the natural environment of Humboldt County – redwood trees, shore birds, and wildflowers are recurrent themes.

“Because of my lifelong love of felines (large and small), I am thrilled to be part of the Tiger! Auction for Panthera.org. This tile reflects a mother’s love for her cub and gives me hope that tigers will retain the habitat to continue to rear their young.”

Love of color is reflected in the vibrant glazes she achieves with selected glazes for high-fire tiles. All work is fired to Cone 10 and is suitable for outdoor installation or for kitchens and baths.

She has created commissioned work, such as kitchen murals, for homes, and art for Sequoia Park Zoo and other public spaces.

"The Farmhouse Studio" for Panthera

Regina Case
"The Farmhouse Studio," 2012
14x11 acrylic on canvas
$875
20% donation to Panthera.org

This is remembering the first whole room I had for a studio, on the second floor of a wonderful old farmhouse we rented for almost nothing. Surrounded by flower farms and dairyland-its second floor height put me almost in the low clouds that blew over the dunes from the ocean. A magical place.

Marian Coleman's "Walk on the Wild Side"
Our auction for Panthera.org netted about $1250 to donate (a firm number to follow when the dust settles).

Thank you to Stock and Rachel of the C Street Hall Gallery for donating the space and all the hours hanging the work and gallery sitting.

Times are tough and most pieces went for minimum bid, which means the donations are coming out of the artist's livelihoods, which is immensely generous. And they were happy to do it. Thank you so much to the artists! A beautiful show.

Some gallery visitors who could not afford to buy handed over what they could to donate for them.

And thank you to the collectors, for coming and walking away with some wonderful art to help Panthera.

Everything helps.

And we were able to spread the word about the wonderful work Panthera is doing to ensure a future with big cats in the wild.
